End of an Era: Powder Magazine Publishes Final Issue

CAMPING GEAR

The final note from Powder’s editor? ‘Powder To The People.’

In October, Powder Magazine announced that after 48 years it would shut down the publication. As of today, its magazine, website, and social media channels will cease to create and share content, marking the end of the line for one of the most cherished skier publications.

“We must admit that this issue, like every issue before, has been made possible only with a little (no, a lot) of help from our friends. We count you, our readers, among them,” Powder’s editors wrote in closing. “What began as a celebration, Powder remains an expression of thanks. This is for you. Powder To The People.”

Photographer Nic Alegre got to shoot the final cover, with a photo that gives a nod to the magazine’s first 1972 issue.

“We knew with the wind gusts and the sun that he would be perfectly backlit, so he just went for it, and that’s the cover shot,” said Alegre, who is based in Jackson Hole and shoots regularly for Teton Gravity Research.

“I’ve always had so much respect for the photographers, designers, and everyone who made Powder what it’s been for so long,” he continued.

“If an iconic magazine like Powder is going to go out, I’m glad to have the honor of the last cover shot. I just hope I did the magazine justice.”

The final Winter 2020 publication is no longer available for purchase but is still in circulation. All other issues are available for purchase through Powder Magazine’s archives.
