National Public Lands Day is Saturday, September 26. Here’s how you can take part.
National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer event for public lands. The National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) established the holiday in 1994, and it’s been held annually in September ever since.
Besides bringing thousands of people together to volunteer and improve public lands (like national forests), the celebration also marks one of just 6 days a year that U.S. national park and historic site entry is free.
More Ways to Celebrate Public Lands
Due to social distancing requirements this year, many public lands sites will be unable to host in-person events. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t still get involved. The NEEF is hosting virtual events to connect the public to iconic parks, national forests, marine estuaries, and other public lands.
If you don’t want to volunteer, consider joining a virtual NPLD event to celebrate. Or get outside and enjoy the public lands themselves. Check out more options for volunteers here, or find a park to visit closer to home.
